Jerry Siegel’s (Superman creator) Childhood Home

I loved Superman comics as a child. It never bothered me for one minute that I was female and Superman was male — I’d still run down the street wildly flapping my arms trying to fly. Supergirl never did it for me. But Superman, well, that was clearly different.

The enduring Superhero was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster. Mr. Siegel died in 1996 and his childhood home began to fall into disrepair, especially after his father Mitchell, died during a robbery while held at gunpoint.

Enter novelist Brad Meltzer, and Superman fan. He visited the Siegel house and the current owners and found that despite their good intentions, there was just not enough money to renovate and repair.

Mr. Meltzer has set out to change that. From his website Ordinary People Change The World

The house where Google was created is saved. The farm where Hewlett Packard was founded is preserved. And Richard Nixon’s house is a museum. But the house where Superman — one of the world’s most recognized heroes — was created? It’s a wreck. So, with the creation of The Siegel & Shuster Society, we hope to raise enough money to repair the house and make sure it will be saved, restored, and there so you can take your kids one day.

As you know, OffbeatTravel.com loves to focus on unusual places to visit, especially on the Travel Shorts page. We’re thinking, down the road, it would be our pleasure and honor to let folks know there’s a new attraction in Cleveland, Superman’s home.
