It’s time to visit Libya: Visa limitations are lifted and there’s those UNESCO world heritage sites

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

It had never occurred to me to visit Libya. I thought of it as the fiefdom of Muammar Al-Gaddafi, but Libya is also home to five quite impressive UNESCO world heritage sites. Read more about visiting Libya and those amazing heritage sites.

Why haven’t we heard about this before? If you’re like me, you just kinda assumed that people in the USA were discouraged by our government from going. It turns out that it was Libya that was doing the discouraging.

According to a spokesperson from Libya Expeditions – “There are no U.S. restrictions to traveling to Libya , this was simply a 5 year long diplomatic impasse with the Libyan side not issuing tourist visas for U.S. citizens because of reciprocity issues.”

It seems our government was reluctant to issue visas, and the Libyans retaliated by not issuing them to US citizens. But apparently the rest of the world was welcomed.

That has changed. A trade and investment pact was signed between Libya and the U.S. last Thursday in Tripoli.

Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas: Preview of the cool new products we’ll soon not be able to live without

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Imagine a room filled with people, cameras, and microphones. Booths that line the walls and make artificial corridors in the convention room, show the latest technology and are thronged, offering stiff competition to the endless supply of free drinks, and tasty ravioli, ziti with meat sauce, all you can eat giant shrimp (and yes I know that’s an oxymoron), sushi and more.

I’ve just landed in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show and I’m both starving – hey, the airline-supplied peanuts and orange juice is just not enough to tide me over – and eager to explore the new wonders promised. I’m also in sensory overload, and loving it.

I know I’ll be going back to see more of these products, but here are some of the really cool things that caught my attention.

Zomm is one of them. They call it the world’s first Bluetooth wireless leash for mobile phones. Yeah. Okay, what it is – is a really small, key chain size slick colorful disk that sounds an alarm if you wander away from your phone. It’s an award-winner because it also sports a call notification with speaker phone, a panic alarm that will work world wide. There’s also a very sweet family story behind the name — it stands for Zachry, Olivia, Madison, and Mom.

Zomm isn’t the only security tag technology – although it could be the cutest. NIO (TM) also has a very clever Bluetooth security system. Attach the tag to something important, and load the software on your phone and the two items communicate to make sure you don’t wander off or lose one or the other.

Wireless charger pads entranced me. Charge the pads up before you leave and then simply place your device on the pad and it charges up. And, they are coming out with netbook chargers. Again, lay it on the pad and it charges. No wires to drag with you. I’m told that some digital cameras will also charge up on these pads. As someone who drags chargers and cables all over the world, this sounds pretty good. The system folds up to a small package.

You can also charge the pad up before you leave, and you’ll be set to go.

More? – iGo Green (TM) has outlets that automatically shut down when your electronic device is fully powered. Know how you plug something in and then walk away. Come back the next morning perhaps? All that time there is a trickle of electricity. These outlets sense when the device is charged, and cut off that trickle.

MSI offers a full range of computers, but their netbooks should be considered by travelers. The smaller and less stylish one will run for over 17 hours (yes, you did read that correctly). Price point? About $400. Their new wireless notebook battery charger works without a power cord. Set the notebook on the wireless battery charging pad and charge away.

Will wonders never cease? Tomorrow will bring more.

Chris Elliott, Full text of SD 1544-09-06 authorizing pat-downs, physical inspections, and subpoenas

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

I’m not sure what provoked the reaction of TSA but today, December 29th, Chris Elliott of Elliott.org blog and traveler fame, was served a subpoena for publishing the Security Directive 1544-09-06. Read more …

They want him to turn over…
All documents, emails, and/or faxsimile transmissions (sic) in your control possession or control concerning your receipt of TSA Security Directive 1544-09-06 dated December 25, 2009.

Here are the most interesting parts of the SD

ACTIONS REQUIRED: If you conduct scheduled and/or public charter flight operations under a Full Program under 49 CFR 1544.101(a) departing from any foreign location to the United States (including its territories and possessions), you must immediately implement all measures in this SD for each such flight.

At the BOARDING GATE:
1. Perform thorough pat-down of all passengers at boarding gate prior to boarding, concentrating on upper legs and torso.
2. Physically inspect 100 percent of all passenger accessible property at the boarding gate prior to boarding, with focus on syringes being transported along with powders and/or liquids.

IN FLIGHT
During flight, the aircraft operator must ensure that the following procedures are followed:

1. Passengers must remain in seats beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination.
2. Passenger access to carry-on baggage is prohibited beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination.
3. Disable aircraft-integrated passenger communications systems and services (phone, internet access services, live television programming, global positioning systems) prior to boarding and during all phases of flight.
4. While over U.S. airspace, flight crew may not make any announcement to passengers concerning flight path or position over cities or landmarks.
5. Passengers may not have any blankets, pillows, or personal belongings on the lap beginning 1 hour prior to arrival at destination.

By the way, the directive has an expiration date: EXPIRATION: 0200Z on December 30, 2009

Has Elliott disclosed sensitive information compromising the integrity of security?

Well, you decide. Here’s information taken directly from the TSA site:

TSA issued a directive for additional security measures to be implemented for last point of departure international flights to the United States. Passengers flying into the United States from abroad can expect to see additional security measures at international airports such as increased gate screening including pat-downs and bag searches. During flight, passengers may be asked to follow flight crew instructions, such as stowing personal items, turning off electronic equipment and remaining seated during certain portions of the flight.

Seems to me they said there MIGHT be the actions that the Directive said it would be 100% no “may be” involved.

Explosive device set off on Northwest plane: Subdued by passengers on the flight

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Should this make us wary of flying? No, but it should change the way we approach flying.

An explosive or perhaps incendiary device was set off on the Northwest Airlines flight. The Nigerian would-be perpetrator was ultimately subdued by passengers, and suffered serious burns on his legs from the device.

But perhaps the title of this article highlighting the actions of passengers to bring the man down is the best one (and not just because it’s the one I used).

The papers have noted that at least one person climbed over others and jumped on the man. According to Foxnews.com that man was Jasper Schuringa, a film director who was traveling to the US to visit friends jumped on Abdul Mutallab (identified elsewhere as Mudallad) the would-be terrorist to subdue him.

And this is the most crucial part.

I applaud Jasper Schuringa, and the other passengers who joined in. I hope that should the occasion arise, I and my fellow passengers would do the same.

Bring down the would-be terrorist, and stop the terrorism.

Real ID: Will you be denied boarding on January 1st

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

After all the rants and threats, the sticks and carrots, it begins to look like Department of Homeland Security will, however reluctantly, let Real ID pass on.

According to the statement I received from the DHS – “…Should Congress not act before it adjourns this year, DHS has planned for contingencies related to REAL ID implementation, including extending the deadline as a last resort.”

With more and more states making their licenses secure, there really is no reason for this expensive and invasive program. It tramples on states rights, and creates a national database that has been compared to the dreaded “do you have your papers?” in every Grade B movie.

As for the airlines – they’ve been quiet for a number of reasons.

My favorite is that TSA actually has procedures in place to accommodate people who do not have valid IDs. Huh? Ah, yes.

No one has talked much about that.

Sweat Lodge Deaths: Stanley Milgram, the misused power of authority, and obedience

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

I don’t know much about sweat lodges, but I do know about inappropriate obedience and the misuse of authority. And James Arthur Ray has both misused his authority, and the people in the sweat lodge followed him too eagerly.

In the process, he has also outraged native Americans. In his article Commercialization of sweat-lodge ceremony appalls Native Americans.

Ray is, of course, under investigation for his travesty of a sweat lodge experience that left two dead and 19 hospitalized.

How did this happen? The answer comes from the research of Stanley Milgram conducted in the early 1960s. Milgram wanted to investigate the boundaries of obedience. His research, which would probably not be conducted today, found that if a white-coated scientist directed people to deliver painful, even fatal electric shocks to another, more than half would obey.

Poisonous Algae a Problem for France and the Whole World

Friday, August 28th, 2009

It must have been horrifying for Vincent Petit when within minutes his horse stumbled into a mire of algae on a beach in Brittany and died.

But by then he had already lost consciousness. Luckily his plight was witnessed and Petit was dragged out of the glop and revived. The incident spurred a fast French response.

The French Minister Francois Fillon announced at a press briefing that the state would “take over the responsibility for cleaning the beaches most affected.” He is also creating an interdepartmental committee to fight proliferation of the deadly green algae and to protect the population and beaches.

Fillon spoke on a Brittany beach after the government study confirmed the toxic nature of gases emanating from decomposing green algae spread over numerous beaches.

In the case of Brittany the cause is the formation of dangerous gases – notably hydrogen sulfide, with its characteristic rotten-egg smell – when they wash up on land and decay.

But, the algae and the toxins produced are a problem world-wide.  There have been reports from all everywhere from the coast of Australia, and even lakes and reservoirs of USA of algae and the neurotoxin produced.

In Massachusetts health officials are advising people to take caution around Lake Attitash.  State Department of Health is advising people to avoid contact with a blue-green algae that’s been found at two popular central Indiana reservoirs.

And Italian beaches aren’t escaping this new plague. Swimming has been banned along sections of the Italian coastline because of blooms of toxic algae.

Continental Airlines joins the Star Alliance

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

I have most of my frequent flier miles on United Airlines. It’s not because UA goes places I want to visit, but because it’s the best way to fly out of the country from my beloved Albuquerque Sunport (and I do love the Sunport). With family in Germany, and a bit of wanderlust, I seem to fly out of the country once or twice a year. As I’ve mentioned an uncountable number of times, ABQ is no one’s hub city, so I often leave the country using an airport serviced by United (and often on a Lufthansa flight as well). Both are Star Alliance.

Although I have complained vigorously about some of United’s policies, I keep my flier miles there for the free perks – not only free baggage, but free (as in doesn’t cost a single FF mile) upgrades to Economy Plus.

For flying within the country out of ABQ, United is pretty useless. I love Southwest Airlines, and I fly Continental quite a bit. So I was delighted to read that

On April 7, 2009, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) tentatively approved the application for Continental Airlines to join the existing antitrust immunized alliance between United Airlines and eight other Star Alliance member carriers, and for Continental to enter into an integrated worldwide alliance.

I hope this means that my FF miles will pile up higher and higher. One day, I might actually find a flight I can use to go somewhere.
